just curious... why are bikes gears on the right hand side, not the left?

this photo is of a bike made by "Left Hand Cycles" that I found on http://megadeluxe.com/daily-deluxe/the-daily-deluxe-21-february-2013

And their name made me ponder the side of the bicycle that the sprocket and gears are on.
